The American Playwriting Foundation (David Bar Katz, Founding Artistic Director) and Building for the Arts NY (David J. Roberts, President; Jeffrey A. Horwitz, Board Chair) have announced a new Relentless Award for Ten-Minute Plays, created to support WGA members who are unable to work due to the current strike. Open to all current WGA members, the Award will grant each of the six winning authors $10,000. Their plays will be performed in a special benefit performance at Theatre Row by Relentless Theater Company actors including Wayne Brady, Billy Crudup, Vincent D’Onofrio, Gina Gershon, Walton Goggins, Natasha Lyonne, Sam Rockwell, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Liev Schreiber, and Yul Vazquez. Five finalists will also be named and awarded $1,000 each. Picket Play judges include Tanya Barfield, Eric Bogosian, Aleshea Harris, and Lynn Nottage. The American Playwriting Foundation believes that the survival of writers is essential to our society and that writers deserve respect and support—financially and artistically. APF is committed to offering that support, and to celebrating writers’ relentless spirit and invaluable creative contributions to American life.“Many WGA members began their careers as playwrights,” commented American Playwriting Foundation Artistic Director David Bar Katz. “The Relentless Award, the largest cash prize in theater, was created for the specific purpose of supporting playwrights so that writing for TV and film wouldn’t be their only option if they wanted to eat and pay rent. But during this time, when those avenues have been closed to them, the American Playwriting Foundation – the theater community, the first artistic home to many of these artists – is here for them and has their backs.”Submissions will be open now through September 5, 2023. Plays should be no longer than 15 pages and should be written specifically for this award. The required topic/theme of the plays is ‘Picketing/Striking.’ For full play submission guidelines, please visit https://theatrerow.submittable.com/submit/268258/the-2023-relentless-award-ten-minute-picket-plays.Submission dates for the Relentless Award for full-length plays will be announced this fall. The American Playwriting Foundation, established in honor of Philip Seymour Hoffman and his relentless pursuit of truth in the theater, has presented the Relentless Award annually to a playwright in recognition of a new work. In its mere eight years, the Relentless Award has become one of the most impactful awards in theater, launching some of theater’s brightest new artists who are revitalizing the American stage: Obie Award-winner and Pulitzer finalist Aleshea Harris, whose plays have been produced non-stop since her Relentless win; Clare Barron, whose winning play Dance Nation went on to become a Pulitzer Prize finalist and winner of the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize; Harrison David Rivers, whose play The Bandaged Place was produced at Roundabout Theatre Company; and Sarah DeLappe, whose play The Wolves, with over 500 productions, has become one of the most produced plays of the last decade.Building for the Arts NY (BFA) expands access to the performing arts by providing creative space, learning opportunities, and hubs for artistic connection. BFA’s signature programs – Theatre Row, Music and the Brain, and the American Playwriting Foundation– nurture artists, audiences, and youth with a focus on accessibility and inclusion.

Affecting an estimated one million Americans and 10 million worldwide, Parkinson’s disease is the second-most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer’s and is the 14th-leading cause of death in the U.S. It is associated with a progressive loss of motor control (e.g., shaking or tremor at rest and lack of facial expression), as well as non-motor symptoms (e.g., depression and anxiety). There is no cure for Parkinson’s and 90,000 new cases are diagnosed each year in the U.S. alone.

FACTORY THEATRE, Toronto’s vibrant centre for Canadian theatre, announces its 2023-24 Season, the first curated by Artistic Director Mel Hague. The season brings together an impressive roster of nationally recognized and award-winning artists to offer audiences a year of fun, joyful, and thrilling live performances.

“Through the delicate beauty of The Waltz, the sardonic brilliance of Monster and Here Lies Henry, and the multiversal supernova of In the Kitchen, Factory’s 2023-24 Season explores our most intimate moments, our basest instincts, our biggest fears – and brings it all to our stages.”– Mel Hague, Artistic Director & Mark Aikman, Managing Director.

The 2023-24 Season kicks off with the return of THE WALTZ, written by Marie Beath Badian, directed by Nina Lee Aquino (Factory Theatre’s acts of faith), and starring Ericka Leobrera and Anthony Perpuse.Badian’s sequel to her hit play Prairie Nurse continues the intergenerational story of two Filipino families who immigrate to Canada. Set on the doorsteps of a rustic cabin in north-east Saskatchewan, The Waltz captures one perfect moment when two teenagers, whose histories are serendipitously interwoven, spend one evening with a boom box under the magnificent prairie sky at dusk. Brimming with 90’s nostalgia, this smash hit, which charmed audiences last year, continues to capture their hearts as it explores whether we can ever feel truly at home. Presented in the Mainspace Theatre September 6 – 17, 2023 before touring to Prairie Theatre Exchange (Winnipeg, MB) November 14 – 26, 2023 and the Great Canadian Theatre Company (Ottawa, ON) February 13 – 25, 2024.

Next in the season is a pair of iconic shows from playwright Daniel MacIvor; MONSTER and HERE LIES HENRY. Finalist for the Governor General’s Award for Drama, MONSTER peels back the psychological layers of 16 different characters to reveal the dark heart of individual experience. With a masterful blend of suspense, humor, and raw emotion, Monster invites you to confront your fears and embrace the complexities that make us human. Daniel MacIvor’s chilling one-person show returns featuring powerhouse performer Karl Ang, directed by Soheil Parsa (who returns to Factory after his multi-Dora Award-winning production of Wildfire in 2022). Presented in the Studio Theatre November 16 – December 10, 2023.

In HERE LIES HENRY, director Tawiah M’Carthy takes on MacIvor’s seminal one-person show about a man alone in a room with a mission to tell you something you don’t already know, with Damien Atkins(Soulpepper’s King Lear/Queen Goneril) stepping into the iconic role. Henry is nervous, a self-proclaimed liar, and compelled by some unknown force to tell us his life story. MacIvor’s spellbinding head-scratcher of a one-man play twists and turns, flips and sidesteps through Henry’s struggle to grasp the meaning of life, love, beauty, death, truth and lies. Presented in the Mainspace Theatre November 23 – December 17, 2023.

As a special treat, for our Sunday performances, audiences can get a single ticket to see both Monster and Here Lies Henry in a matinee double bill.

The season concludes with the world premiere of IN THE KITCHEN, a new work from playwrights Fatuma Adar, Augusto Bitter, Olivier Choinière in a translation by Bobby Theodore, and Rosa Laborde, directed by Kat Sandler. These four playwrights join forces to tackle the classic ‘kitchen sink drama’ trope. Sharing a cast and set, the anthology of new works creates a mini-multiverse inside a kitchen and one unforgettable night of theatre. Presented in the Mainstage Theatre March 8 – 31, 2024.

“We are so grateful to share this season with you. Whether you join us for a play, for a talk, or an afternoon chatting with your friends in our courtyard, welcome to Factory. Make yourself at home.” – Mel Hague & Mark Aikman.

I’m happy to report that Isaac Mizrahi has moved his act from The Carlyle to 54 Below, known as Broadway’s Living Room, and is reaching a whole new audience, as a result. If you think you know this legendary designer because you see him on QVC….think again!

Last night, back by popular demand he opened his current engagement at the club performing songs that ranged from Noel Coward to Grace Jones and included tunes by Frank Loesser, Cole Porter, Cy Coleman and Fred Ebb among others. His hilarious patter and the excellent musicianship on stage created quite an entertainment cocktail to go along with 54 Below’s special drink menu.

Isaac Mizrahi has worked extensively in the entertainment industry as a performer, host, writer, designer and producer for over 30 years. He has an annual residency at Cafe’ Carlyle in New York City and has performed at various venues across the country such as Joe’s Pub, The regency Ballroom, and several City Winery locations nationwide.
